How the Monson Club weathered the energy crisis with help from whole market consultancy Full Power

The Monson Club has stood at the heart of its local community for nearly a century. With over 200 members and a rich history of supporting local sports teams and providing a safe, welcoming space for residents to relax and socialise, the Club has always prided itself on being more than just a venue, it’s a community asset.

But like many small, not for profit, charity organisations, the Monson Club was hit hard by the energy crisis in late 2022 causing a financial storm that almost closed their doors for good.

A crisis that hit close to home

“In October 2022, our electricity supplier unexpectedly ended our contract,” recalls Dave Shadrach, Club Secretary. “We had no choice but to take out a one-year deal with another supplier just to keep the lights on, literally.”

That emergency contract saw the Club’s energy costs skyrocket. Daily electricity costs jumped from approximately £20 per day to between £50 and £65, leaving the Club needing to find an additional £1,000 a month just to cover electricity.

“The Club is run by volunteer Committee Members and any profit we make goes straight back into the Club to improve facilities and keep it running for our members,” Dave explains. “We were faced with numerous supplier price increases as well as the energy crisis so when our bills more than doubled, we had to make some really tough decisions. We cut costs wherever we could and raised prices just to survive.”

Finding a Way Forward

In 2023, things began to look up when the Monson Club was introduced to Full Power Utilities, through local introducer, Sally Cranham. Full Power are a whole market commercial energy broker known for helping businesses of all shapes and sizes, including community organisations such as The Monson, find better deals on gas and electricity.

“The difference was night and day,” says Dave. “They took the time to understand our situation and found us a two-year electricity deal that predicted savings of around 50%, plus a three-year gas contract with estimated savings of 67%. That was a huge relief.”

For the first time in months, the Club was able to breathe. With lower energy costs, they could focus again on what really mattered, serving their members and the wider community.

“We’ve just signed another two-year electricity deal through Full Power Utilities, and we’re expecting to save another 30% on top of our current rates,” Dave shares. “It’s been a game changer. We’re also looking forward to working with them on securing a new gas contract next year.”

A stronger future

The Monson Club is more than a building, it’s part of the social fabric of the community. It provides employment for local residents, supports sports teams, and offers a safe, friendly environment for people of all ages to connect.

“Our goal has always been to be here for the long haul,” Dave says. “Full Power Utilities didn’t just save us money; they helped us keep that promise to our members.”

As the Club approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, it does so with greater confidence and a renewed sense of purpose, proving that the right support at the right time can make all the difference.
